Genetics And Depression

Despite depression is among the most common psychiatric diseases, little is known about its etiology. Recent findings from family, twin and adoption studies suggest a genetic basis for susceptibility to depression such as other affective disorders. The mode of inheritance of depression does not follow a simple pattern, a combination of multiple genes and environmental factors takes place in the etiology of the disorder. Promising findings have been emerged in linkage and association studies though no consensus on a mode of inheritance, a single susceptibility gene or a chromosomal region has yet been achieved. In the present paper family, twin, adoption studies and molecular genetic studies were reviewed.
