Genetics And Depression
Dr. M.Bülent SÖNMEZa, Dr. Ercan ABAYa
aPsikiyatri AD, Trakya Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, EDİRNE Despite depression is among the most common psychiatric diseases, little is known about its etiology. Recent findings from family, twin and adoption studies suggest a genetic basis for susceptibility to depression such as other affective disorders. The mode of inheritance of depression does not follow a simple pattern, a combination of multiple genes and environmental factors takes place in the etiology of the disorder. Promising findings have been emerged in linkage and association studies though no consensus on a mode of inheritance, a single susceptibility gene or a chromosomal region has yet been achieved. In the present paper family, twin, adoption studies and molecular genetic studies were reviewed. Current status of genetic research and future directions were discussed. Keywords: Depression; genetics; linkage (genetics); associationTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2007, 3(47):12-8
